Description
London Buses – Online soft pastel workshop
London after dark gives us a wonderful combination of deep shadow, glowing lights and brilliant colour.
In this workshop we’ll create an atmospheric nocturne featuring one of the city’s most recognisable sights – its red buses.
Busy urban scenes can look complicated, so I’ll show you how I break the reference down and concentrate on the shapes, colours and contrasts that give the scene its character.
During the workshop we’ll explore:
- establishing strong dark values
- creating glowing lights against a dark background
- using the brilliant red of the buses without allowing it to dominate
- simplifying a busy street scene
- suggesting rather than describing every architectural detail
- creating depth and atmosphere in a nocturne
When: Tuesday 3 November, 10am–12pm UK time
Where: Live on Zoom
Recording: Available within 24 hours, with access for at least 12 months
Join me live or use the recording to work through the painting more slowly afterwards.
You don’t need to be confident with buildings or perspective to enjoy this one – we’ll concentrate on the painting rather than trying to create an architectural drawing.
Want to join me for more than one? This workshop is also included in my Autumn Series 2026, with six daytime workshops, the festive workshop, four evening Q&As and additional Series benefits. See more workshops from my Autumn Series 2026.
