Windswept Cottages – Online soft pastel workshop

Tuesday 17 November 2026, 10am–12pm UK time

Inspired by a winter walk at Lee Bay in Devon, this characterful cottage is a lovely subject for exploring stonework, windows and quirky buildings in soft pastel.

We’ll concentrate on capturing character rather than perfect architectural detail. Your cottage should have a little character all of its own.

Live on Zoom with recording access for at least 12 months.

Description

Windswept Cottages – Soft pastel online workshop

Inspired by a winter walk at Lee Bay in Devon, this wonderfully characterful cottage immediately caught my eye.

Buildings can sometimes make us tighten up and worry about straight lines and perspective. In this workshop I want to approach things rather differently.

We’ll look for the character of the building – its shapes, stonework, windows and slightly quirky details – and interpret them with relaxed pastel marks.

During the workshop we’ll explore:

  • simplifying buildings into manageable shapes
  • creating convincing stonework without painting every stone
  • windows, darks and reflections
  • retaining the character of an old building
  • using expressive rather than overly architectural marks
  • deciding which details really matter

When: Tuesday 17 November, 10am–12pm UK time
Where: Live on Zoom
Recording: Available within 24 hours, with access for at least 12 months

We’ll work in the sketchbook for this session, making it a lovely opportunity to experiment without feeling that everything has to become a finished painting.

Join live or work through the recording afterwards at a pace that suits you.
